A MAN was yesterday charged with stealing a woman's bag after she was knocked down by a bus.

Stainless Bracelets Unemployed Jonathan Brophy, 23, originally from Dublin but with an address at Richmond Park in Bray, Co Wicklow, was arrested yesterday afternoon.

He was charged with stealing a handbag containing EUR1,000 cash, a passport and keys belonging to Marie Buckland, who later died from her injuries. Ms Buckland, originally from Sligo, was on holiday from the UK when she was injured on Dublin's O'Connell Street on September 15.

The 60-year-old and her friend Jagdish Mangat, 56, were hit by the No145 double-decker Dublin Bus.

The bags disappeared in the confusion after the women stepped out in front of the bus, which was pulling off through a green light near The Spire. Both women were taken to hospital but Mrs Mangat was discharged last weekend.

However, Ms Buckland suffered serious head injuries and was in intensive care before losing her battle for life last Thursday.

Her husband had flown from England to be at her bedside.

Sgt Brian Cullen of Store Street Garda station applied for Brophy to be remanded in custody.

A WIRRAL man has failed to convince a jury that he was drinking in a pub when a woman was mugged.

Karl Fulton, 37, of Beverley Gardens, Thingwall, was convicted of robbery. Sentence was adjourned until September 7.
